“Lost in the Victory”
This is the book that detailed the need that started it all.
“Lost” was written by AWON Founder Ann Bennett and First Founder Susan Johnson Hadler, and published in 1998 by the University of North Texas Press.
Detailing the personal stories of no fewer than 24 orphans of WWII – out of a rumored 183,000 of us who lost our Fathers in World War II – this book exemplifies the many versions of Father Loss that are shared so universally and concentrically by so many of us who grew up behind the “Wall of Silence.”
Quoting from the flyleaf . . . “By publishing this collection, the authors hope to bring home the incredible sacrifice that was made, not only by those who fought, but by the families of those who died. They hope readers will better understand what the four years of WWII cost America in terms of human suffering that did not end with the armistice nor with the burial of the dead.”
The book is currently out of print, but a followup has been discussed. Meanwhile, look for copies on E-Bay, on CraigsList, and in your local library. Meanwhile, run to Amazon, where one copy is currently the only one in stock . . . at $27.
